Food Consumption Dates

We take food consumption dates (use by, best by, sell by) very seriously at the Food Bank and screen all foods. Our volunteers are very well trained in this area.

Most food is good for a period of time beyond the date posted on food. Depending on the product, that time can range from a couple of days to several years. A can of chicken noodle soup is good to eat 5 plus years beyond the date if stored properly. We use a more conservative time of 3 years for low acid canned foods.
